'Rudy is gone'

This was the phrase out of our lips when the pigeon who had camped in our back garden for 5 days, disappeared.

Rudy, as the boys called the pigeon appeared in our back-garden on a Friday and we noticed the bird when we got back from work/nursery in the evening. At first, the bird seemed really ill. We thought the bird might be dehydrated as the week had been very hot- I'm talking average temperatures of 28 degrees Celsius in the north of England. Little did we know that the bird had an injured left foot.

By Saturday, it was obvious the cause for the bird's inactivity. We proceeded to leaving grains and water out for the bird to nibble on/drink as able. By Sunday, the bird was 'limping' round the yard, maybe once in a few hours. By Monday, the 'limping' motion had become more frequent. On Tuesday, i noticed the bird was not only limping but trying to fly onto the fence and spending some time there.

Then on Wednesday, Rudy was gone.

I started to reflect on the journey Rudy made to recovery. At first, it seemed the bird was not going to make it. Then daily, small improvements in its condition were apparent until it was strong enough to fly away.

With respect to the human experience, there are some 'injuries' or 'wounds' that happen and it seems that the affected individual would not be able to get out of this situation. It sometimes seems like a deep ditch that is inescapable, but slowly slowly, things will get better. Although in Rudy's case, it was daily improvement, for some others, it might be a monthly improvement, or even a yearly improvement. Actually, it might not even be that straight-forward, there might be days of improvement and days that seem like regression. But if we hold on and continue to take small steps like Rudy did, IT WILL GET BETTER.
